Dear Friends,

Once again the partnership in education between the Melbourne Archdiocese and the Australian Catholic University has been highlighted by the wonderful welcome from Professor McMullen and our presence in this A.C.U. Gallery.

Monsignor Elliott, Dr. Engebretson and Professor Daffey have given a broad overview of a most interesting and attractive book.

“Catholic Ethical Thinking for Senior Secondary Students” is an attempt to enable us to engage with the culture of our society and to present that service to the society, which the Church alone can give.

The book will be an invaluable help to young people in their search for truth, to develop a capacity to analyse arguments, to see the logic of the Church’s position and to be challenged to reflect more deeply upon important matters affecting life and death, social justice and war.

Indeed, at this time, the Church’s greatest contribution to our society is the vision of the dignity of the human person and of the value of life, which we present as a service to that society.

“Catholic Ethical Thinking” will engage our young readers, meet them where they are and lead them in a wonderful journey of quest and discovery to see the life-giving and enriching gift of the Gospel.

We are indeed fortunate to be Catholic, to have an opportunity of a more complete vision of our world and the service that we give to it.

I congratulate the authors and all who have contributed to this magnificent work. May it be an enrichment and help to young minds and hearts, to be nurtured in the life-giving faith of the Gospel.

With hope in its promise, I declare Catholic Ethical Thinking launched for service, education and inspiration for our schools and beyond. Thank you for your presence here.

+ Denis J. Hart,
Archbishop of Melbourne.

At every Mass we pray: ‘Protect us from all anxiety, as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of Our Saviour, Jesus Christ.’ In these tough times I want young people to see there is a purpose to life. The bad times do pass away. There is hope.

Jesus is the giver of hope. The Church says: ‘Look to Jesus. He has not abandoned us. He offers us a future.’
