STAND UP DAY 2008
This year STAND UP DAY
will be held over 3 days
Friday 17th October
Saturday 18th October
Sunday 19th October
This is will provide schools,
churches, workplaces, individuals and community groups
the opportunity to stand up and speak out in support of
the world's poor.
"It remains an
obligation in justice and the service of human dignity
to attain and even surpass the Millennium Development
Goals"

Eight years ago, 189 World Leaders agreed to end poverty and achieve
the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
On Wednesday 17th October 2007, over 43 million people people
across the world stood up to remind them of this promise.

The Edmund Rice
Centre St Albans conducts a Homework help program for students
who are refugees and recent arrivals, The Centre participated
in the
STAND UP event.
111 people stood up against poverty while the lines of the pledge
were read out by various tutors and students.
The 111 in the room included refugee students of all ages from
Sudan, Iraq, Vietnam, Croatia as well as tutors from Catholic
Colleges: Ave Maria, Parade, St Bernards, St Joseph's Geelong
and CRC Sydenham.
A question by a young Sudanese student: "What's
poverty?!"

web page. The Commission will be actively seeking submissions from social
justice groups wishing to publicise and promote past and present social
justice initiatives.
