St Kevin's Social Justice Group

Purpose of the Group:
To build understanding of social justice in the members of the group and
in parishioners generally with a view that this leads to action in relation
to social justice issues.
The group started with four members in January 2006 and has expanded to
eight members.
The balance of effort between personal development & action and parish
education & action is still being discussed.
Current Activities
1. Meetings are held on the last Monday of each month to discuss social
justice issues and plan parish activities.
2. Activities organised so far are:
- Pass It On Message Stick Relay
- Suggestions for Social Justice related Lenten Observances in newsletters
during Lent
- Arrangements for speakers to come to our April and May meetings to
help understand our future plans as a group.
Proposed Activities
1. July: Reconciliation Week / National Aboriginal &
Torres Strait Islander Sunday:
- Work with the Liturgy Group to create an appropriate liturgy.
- Arranging a speaker or speakers to speak about Indigenous issues
with a focus on Opening the Doors Foundation
2. October: Arrange guest speakers for a lecture series:

- Poverty: Make Poverty History or related topic: October 12th
- Workplace Relations: October 19th
- Environmental Issues: what can ‘we/I’ do practically:
October 26th
3. Investigate action in relation to:
- Indigenous Education
- Developing plans for a commitment by the parish to Opening the Doors
Foundation.
