Melbourne Diocesan Historical Commission

Dear Family Researcher

To assist with your research please note the following information. The MDHC does not keep genealogical records. St Patrick's Cathedral holds marriages and baptisms for the Cathedral; St Francis, City (1852-1929 only); Sacred Heart, Carlton; St Augustine's, City. Individual parishes keep their own records. These are however, all duplicates of the same record held at the Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages.

The Church does not have a centralised record of these but the Registry of Births, Deaths and marriages does. We suggest that your first point of family research should be:

  • The Registry, Births, Deaths and Marriages, Transport House, 589 Collins Street, Melbourne 3000, Victoria, Australia.
    Phone
    : 1300 369 367, Fax: 1902 240 550.
  • The State Library of Victoria also holds Indexes for Victorian Births 1853-1913; Marriages 1853-1930; Deaths 1853-1980.

For the Archivist,
Rachel Naughton.
