DIOCESAN LITURGICAL COMMISSION

Mandate

The policy of the Archdiocese of Melbourne for the celebration of the liturgy is that parishes follow the directives of the Universal Church, contained in the official liturgical books. It is our belief that active and conscious participation engendered by the liturgical books and the Instructions of the Holy See since the Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy (1963) of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) indicate clearly the importance and manner of celebration of the liturgy in the Archdiocese.

In the Archdiocese of Melbourne, the Diocesan Liturgical Commission is established:

  1. To promote full, conscious and active participation by all in the Eucharist and the Sacraments, expecially the R.C.I.A. in accordance with the directives of the Universal Church, and with the purpose above all of leading people to personal holiness.
  2. To encourage by means of the liturgy the true Christian spirit in parishes and communities, with provision for the multi-cultural nature of the Archdiocese.
  3. To carry out tasks assigned by the Archbishop, especially so that the worthy celebration of the Eucharist and Sacraments will be at the centre of Spiritual life.
  4. To foster the approved means of worship of the Eucharist outside of Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, and other celebrations of prayer and devotion which prepare for and harmonise with the Liturgy.
  5. To assist choir members, musicians and animators to provide music which is worthy of the Church's tradition and which lifts the whole person to God.
  6. To assist parishes by providing courses, conducted in accordance with the Church's directives, for the formation of ministers, readers and all who participate.
  7. To advise the Archbishop of the state of liturgy in the diocese and to recommend possible action.
  8. To guide the Director and staff of the Office for Worship, including R.C.I.A. Office, in promotion of Liturgy according to the directives of the Universal Church and the expressed mind of the Archbishop.
+ Denis J. Hart,
Archbishop of Melbourne.

The liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the fount from which all the Church's power flows.
